Facebook (englisch sinngemäß „Studenten-Jahrbuch“) ist eine Website zum Erstellen und Betreiben sozialer Netzwerke, die der Facebook Inc. mit Sitz im kalifornischen Menlo Park gehört.

Die Plattform war im Februar 2004 erstmals zugänglich und erreichte im Januar 2011 nach eigenen Angaben 600 Millionen aktive Nutzer weltweit.[3] Anfang Juni 2011 betrug der Mitgliederbestand 689,3 Millionen.[4] In Deutschland sind mittlerweile 18,6 Millionen Menschen bzw. 22,8 Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung auf Facebook aktiv (Stand: 31. Mai 2011)

LinkedIn
LinkedIn wurde 2003 in Kalifornien, USA gegründet. Es ist mit über 100 Millionen [1] registrierten Nutzern (Stand: Mai 2011) die derzeit größte Plattform dieser Art, und gehört laut Alexa zu den 500 weltweit meistbesuchten Websites. Im November 2010 lag LinkedIn in den USA auf Rang 14 der meistbesuchten Websites,[2] weltweit auf Rang 22.[3] Seit dem 4. Februar 2009 ist das Netzwerk auch in deutscher Sprache verfügbar 

Myspace
Myspace (von englisch „my space“, „mein Raum/Platz“, auch My_____, früher MySpace) ist eine mehrsprachige, werbefinanzierte Website, die ihren Nutzern ermöglicht, kostenlose Benutzerprofile mit Fotos, Videos, Blogs, Gruppen usw. einzurichten. Lange Zeit galt MySpace als der beliebteste Vertreter eines Sozialen Netzwerks (Web 2.0). Seit 2008 jedoch zählt Facebook als einer der Hauptwettbewerber von MySpace mehr Mitglieder. Seitdem hat ein stetiger Rückgang der Mitgliederzahlen eingesetzt. 

Orkut  
Orkut (eigene Schreibweise: orkut) ist ein hauptsächlich in Brasilien und Indien populäres virtuelles soziales Netzwerk. Es soll dem Benutzer ermöglichen, neue Bekanntschaften zu schließen bzw. alte zu pflegen. Durch möglichst präzise Angaben zur eigenen Person sollen sich dabei insbesondere Benutzer mit gleichen Interessen finden können.

Orkut wurde von Orkut Büyükkökten, einem Mitarbeiter von Google Inc., in seiner Freizeit entwickelt und nach ihm benannt. Das Projekt wurde am 22. Januar 2004 in Betrieb genommen und wird von Google unterhalten.


 Xing
XING (bis Ende 2006: openBC) ist eine webbasierte Plattform, in der natürliche Personen vorrangig ihre geschäftlichen (aber auch privaten) Kontakte zu anderen Personen verwalten können. Es wird vom gleichnamigen Unternehmen, der XING AG, betrieben.

Die Bezeichnung „XING“ wurde aus Gründen der Internationalisierung gewählt, da der alte Name OpenBC das englische Kürzel für "v. Chr." enthielt.[2] Der neue Name XING ist zwar ebenfalls mehrdeutig, soll aber zumindest negative Assoziationen vermeiden. So bedeutet das Wort auf Chinesisch „es funktioniert“, „es klappt“ (chinesisch 行 xíng). Auf Englisch steht es als Abkürzung für Crossing, Kreuzung, was als Begegnung von Geschäftskontakten gesehen werden kann.[3]
